What is a Backlight?

Last updated over 1 year ago

Backlights are simple LCD modifications that allow users to illuminate their old Game Boy's reflective LCD's. They consist of a thin square panel with 1-5 SMD LEDs located on one edge. They are typically rated between 2.2 - 3.0V and may require a resistor when installing.

Often used with a polarization film, backlight panels typically have a flat FCP cable for power connection or 2 small wires.

Due to technological differences, backlights only work with the Game Boy DMG (Original) and the Game Boy Pocket. They use a thin acrylic light guide panel created with special lasers to distribute light from small SMD LEDs.
