How do I maintain my brand new lawn?

Last updated over 5 years ago

It’s important that you water your lawn as soon as possible after its initial installation. We will leave you a notice shortly before we lay down your new sod. If you are unable to be home please leave your outside water tap turned on, and we will water as we lay down the sod.

It’s important to water your new sod generously on the first day it’s installed. For the next week, water for about one hour a day in the morning. Then after  that, water every other day, keeping the sod and soil surface constantly moist but not soaking. And don’t worry about being forgetful – we made it easy to keep track with our Watering Schedule! It’s not uncommon for sod to go into shock after installation and turn yellow. Don’t stress! The best way to reverse this is with proper watering and maintenance.

Here are some tips from the pros:

Watering

  • Avoid watering in direct sunlight. In the morning is best!
  • Water your lawn generously, but avoid over-watering! Put a small pet food or tuna can about 6" away from sprinkler. When the can is full, it is time to move the sprinkler to the next area.
  • Start watering every day if daytime temperatures reach above 25ºC.
  • Water areas closer to your home a little extra, because heat reflected off buildings usually dries out those areas more.
  • Keep an eye on the wind to make sure you’re watering the right area!
Mowing and Maintenance

  • Cut your lawn 2-3 weeks after the initial installation of your sod.
  • Take care not to cut it too short! Aim to cut grass to a height of 2.5" to 3" in a single mowing. Try setting your mower at a cutting height of approximately 3 1/2" to promote growth and prevent weeds and keep those blades sharp!
  • It is important to fertilize your new sod the first week it is laid. After that, try to fertilize your lawn once every spring and again in the fall.
  • Give it some time to set! It’s important to avoid walking on freshly laid sod so you don’t damage it. We recommend minimizing your use of the area for the first month to make sure your lawn stays picture perfect.
  • Aerate your lawn in the fall. This helps water, air and nutrients reach the plant roots. If areas of your sod become thin put some seed over top of the area so weeds do not set in.
  • Spreading grass seed late summer or early fall on your lawn will ensure that it remains thick.
  • Weed control is important if you see weeds appear, pull them out by the root.
