My smoke detector is making a chirping sound. What should I do?

Last updated over 5 years ago

Smoke detectors have been installed throughout your home. We have installed a wired-in model and also features a battery model for backup in case of a power outage.

Smoke detector tips:
  • Some models have a green light which is visible if you stand directly under the detector this light indicates that power is being supplied to the alarm
  • If your detector starts to make a chirp sound this could be an indication that your battery needs to be changed
  • Should replace batteries every year
  • Should test monthly – most units have a reset button this should be depressed & a high pitch squeal can be heard. Regular testing will help discover any failures or dead batteries.
  • The detector should be cleaned periodically (manufacturer recommends at least once a year) as dust can accumulate and set off false alarms.
  • If the detector is still chirping after cleaning and changing the battery then the unit should be replaced.
  • Do replace your smoke detectors every 10 years or less.
  • Do not “borrow” a battery from a smoke alarm
  • Do not paint smoke detectors
